The APA  Detroit Chapter is affiliated with the American Payroll Association, but is an autonomous and independent organization.

The Chapter is a non-profit professional organization dedicated to providing educational, communication, and networking opportunities for payroll professionals.

Next Chapter Meeting  

Registration is now open for our next Chapter Meeting. The meeting will be held on 6/18/15 and Blake Springer (Senior Manager, Deloitte) will present "Global Payroll and Foreign Nationals."  Meeting details and a link to online registration are available at our Chapter Meeting Schedule page.

2015 CPP Exam Preparation Class
Our 2015 CPP Exam Preparation Class, presented in conjunction with Schoolcraft College in Livonia, will be held Wednesday evenings between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm, beginning May 6th and running through August 19th.  The format is a classroom lecture on a different payroll topic each week, plus two mini-exams to test your knowledge and preparedness.  For individuals currently certified as a CPP or FPC, the class has been approved by the American Payroll Association for up to 41 recertification credit hours (depending on your attendance).

If you plan to sit for the certification exam, download the CPP Candidate Examination Handbook at www.americanpayroll.org/certification and review the required educational and work experience prerequisites for the certification exam before registering for this class.  There are no eligibility requirements to enroll in this Preparation Class.

Cost of the Exam Preparation Class is $235 ($188 for seniors).  Participants will need the 2015 edition of The Payroll Source book, available from the American Payroll Association at www.americanpayroll.org/store.  Registration is now open and can be done online, mail-in, or walk-in.

To register online:

1)  Go to https://webadvisor.schoolcraft.edu.

2)  If you already have a Schoolcraft College WebAdvisor account and ID number, log into your account before continuing.

3)  On the left side of the screen, click “Continuing Education (Non-Credit).”

4)  Under the Registration menu, click “Register and Pay for Continuing Education Classes.”

5)  Scroll down the page and enter the 6-digit Section Number (930612) or the 4-digit CES Number (1981), then click “Submit.”

6)  On the next screen, click the checkbox for this class from the course list at the bottom of the screen and click “Submit.”  

7)  On the following screens, enter the required enrollment information.  A credit card or eCheck is necessary for online registration.

To register by mail-in or walk-in:

Go to http://www.schoolcraft.edu/docs/default-source/cepd/cepd-registration-form.pdf?sfvrsn=4 to download and print the registration/admission form.  Complete the form and submit to Schoolcraft College with payment.  The title of the class is “Certified Payroll Professional.”  The 6-digit section number is 930612 and the 4-digit CES number is 1981.

We’re moving again!  The CPP Class has a new home on the Schoolcraft College campus. All class sessions will be in Room 122 of the Jeffress Center at the southeast corner of Seven Mile and Haggerty roads in Livonia.

Our April 2014 meeting focused on "Gender Differences.  The differences between how women and men communicate" presented by Diane Young, President, The Athena Financial Group

Evelyn Adams from the MiWAM Support Group presented "MiWAN for Employers" at our July 2014 meeting.

Chapter President Mary Surko, CPP, introduced our guest speaker, Gino Petrozzi, Mgr, National Tax-Employment Tax Advisory Services, Ernst & Young, LLP at the September 2014 Chapter meeting.

Silver Anniversary Statewide.  Thanks to chairperson Susan Sather, CPP, and the entire Statewide Committee for another outstanding conference. With over 170 attendees, 20 speakers, and17 sponsors, it was an exciting, informative, and fun educational and networking event!  APA Executive Director Dan Maddux opened the conference congratulating the Michigan Chapters on our 25th Annual Statewide Conference.

Chapter Treasurer and Director of Payroll at Ilitch Holdings, Inc., Howard I. Goldman, CPP, provided special year-end guidance for attendees at our November, 2014 meeting.  Also at the meeting, Chapter President, Mary Surko, CPP recognized Kari Rosol, CPP for achieving certification in 2014.  

Chapter Treasurer and Payroll Payroll Director at Ilitch Holdings Howard I. Goldman, CPP presented “"Form 941 Amendments - What you need to know" at our April, 2015 Chapter Meeting.


At our February, 2015 meeting Mike Muha, and Mike Melquist from Workforce Software presented "Cloud Time and Attendance: How a modern solution can improve decision making, boost productivity, and provide a better view labor leakage of your total workforce."

Chapter president, Tena Gibson, CPP  hosted the meeting.

At our March, 2015 meeting Luanne Brown, CPP, Payroll Manager at Grand Valley State University, presented an overview of taxable and non- taxable fringe benefits.
