Our 2012 CPP Exam Preparation Class, presented in conjunction with Schoolcraft College in Livonia, will be held Wednesday evenings between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm, beginning May 16th and running through August 29th (except for the week of Independence Day, when class will be held Monday, July 2nd instead of Wednesday, July 4th). The class format is a lecture on a different payroll topic each week, plus two mini-exams to test your knowledge and preparedness. For individuals currently certified as a CPP or FPC, the class will be approved for up to 48 recertification credit hours (depending on your attendance).

If you plan to sit for the certification exam, download the CPP Candidate Examination Handbook at www.americanpayroll.org/certification and review the required educational and work experience prerequisites for the certification exam before registering for this class. There are no eligibility requirements to enroll in this Preparation Class.

Cost of the Exam Preparation Class is $195 ($156 for seniors). Participants will need the 2012 edition of The Payroll Source book, available from the American Payroll Association at www.americanpayroll.org/store. Registration opens April 2nd and can be done online, mail-in, or walk-in (Schoolcraft College no longer offers class registration via telephone).

1) Go to
www.schoolcraft.edu.
2) On the left side of the screen, under “Register for classes,” click “Continuing education.”
3) To enroll online, scroll about halfway down the page and click “Use WebAdvisor to search for your class” under the Options category. On the next screen, click “Register and Pay for Continuing Education Classes.” A credit card is necessary for online registration.
4) For mail-in or walk-in registration, click “Registration Form” under the Forms category. Print and complete the registration/admission form, and submit to Schoolcraft College with payment.
 

The title of the class is “Certified Payroll Professional.” The 6-digit section number is 930612 and the 4-digit CES number is 1981.

Dave Dobson of Premier Pay Cards presented "Pay Card News -- Now You Can Be Paid for Paying Your Employees" - an overview of payroll cards at our June 2011 meeting.

“Payroll and Baseball 2011”  Following Cynthia Thompson's presentation of “Direct Deposit – Can there be anything new?” at our July meeting, the Detroit Tigers welcomed us to Comerica Park as they took on the Oakland A’s.

"Employee Tax Topics" presented by Linda M. Kalinowski, Manager, Employer System Support, MI Unemployment Insurance Agency.  Topics discussed at our August 2011 meeting included FUTA credit reduction, State tax credit, and Employer online services.

Our September 2011 meeting featured "U.S./Canada Payroll issues" presented by June Hale, Senior Manager, & Blake Springer, Senior Manager - Global Employer Services, Deloitte Tax LLP, Detroit

The keynote speaker at “Make Your Payroll Garden Grow,” our 22nd Annual Michigan Statewide Conference for Payroll Professionals, was APA Executive Director Dan Maddux.  Dan shared many of his professional and personal experiences with a sold-out audience of 150 payroll professionals.  He gave us an interesting and fun look at the APA’s past, present and future.

Joel Clark and Jennifer Young from JS Clark Agency presented a thought-provoking look at health care reform at our November 2011 Chapter meeting.

Frances Heimes-Savickis, Public Affairs Specialist, Social Security Administration presented an “SSA Update” at  our first 2012 meeting on February 23.  Also, Chapter President Barbara Mattson, CPP, presented certificates to new CPP’s Josh Walters and Lisa Adams, both from Royal Oak Industries.  Josh and Lisa received complimentary meeting registration, certificates, and Chapter CPP pins in recognition of their accomplishment.

Charles M. Jones, Jr. was the speaker at our March meeting.  His presentation "Basic payroll accounting and looking at it from a Controller's point of view" was both fun and informative.  Chapter President Barbara Mattson, CPP conducted the business meeting and requested that anyone having suggested topics for future meetings contact her at President@apadetroit,org.

Our April 2012 meeting featured representatives from the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency.  First, Annmarie Cardenas presented an overview of the agency and the services it provides to employers.  The fraud prevention presentation, “Everybody Owns Integrity,” was presented by Tina Alagna and Sandra Sigworth (pictured).
