The APA  Detroit Chapter is affiliated with the American Payroll Association, but is an autonomous and independent organization.

The Chapter is a non-profit professional organization dedicated to providing educational, communication, and networking opportunities for payroll professionals.

2014 Chapter Meetings Announced!
Dates, locations, and topics of all of our 2014 meetings have been announced.  

Registration is now open for the April 24 Chapter meeting. Diane Young will discuss the differences between how women and men communicate. Registration deadline is 4/18/14.

New!  Enrollment Fee Waived for Chapter Members Who Join APA

Effective January 1, all members of APA in good standing will be granted three RCHs per year. The RCHs will be awarded at the end of the APA member's membership year based on anniversary date, meaning the first membership RCHs will be issued in 2015. Membership in a local APA chapter does not qualify for RCHs.

APA's Chapter Relations will waive the $35 enrollment fee for a new APA membership to all chapter officers and chapter members. Submit the APA Membership Application to Chapter Relations by email or fax to 210-281-3976. Please indicate your chapter name on the form with the payment of $219.

CPP Exam Preparation Class

Our 2014 CPP Exam Preparation Class, presented in conjunction with Schoolcraft College in Livonia, will be held Wednesday evenings between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm, beginning May 7th and running through August 20th.  The class format is a lecture on a different payroll topic each week, plus two mini-exams to test your knowledge and preparedness.  For individuals currently certified as a CPP or FPC, the class has been approved by the American Payroll Association for up to 41 recertification credit hours (depending on your attendance).

If you plan to sit for the certification exam, download the CPP Candidate Examination Handbook at www.americanpayroll.org/certification and review the required educational and work experience prerequisites for the certification exam before registering for this class.  There are no eligibility requirements to enroll in this Preparation Class.

Cost of the Exam Preparation Class is $235 ($188 for seniors).  Participants will need the 2014 edition of The Payroll Source book, available from the American Payroll Association at www.americanpayroll.org/store.  Registration is now open and can be done online, mail-in, or walk-in.

To register online:

1)  Go to http://webadvisor.schoolcraft.edu.

2)  If you already have a WebAdvisor account and ID number, log into your account before continuing.

3)  On the left side of the screen, click “Continuing education.”

4)  Under the Registration menu, click “Register and Pay for Continuing Education Classes.”

5)  Scroll down the page and enter the 6-digit Section Number (930612) or the 4-digit CS Number (1981), then click “Submit.”

6)  On the next screen, click the checkbox for this class from the course list at the bottom of the screen and click “Submit.”   

7)  On the following screens, enter the required enrollment information.  A credit card is necessary for online registration.

To register by mail-in or walk-in:

Go to http://www.schoolcraft.edu/docs/default-source/cepd/cepd-registration-form.pdf?sfvrsn=4 to download and print the registration/admission form.  Complete the form and submit to Schoolcraft College with payment.  The title of the class is “Certified Payroll Professional.”  The 6-digit section number is 930612 and the 4-digit CES number is 1981.

Note that the CPP class now has a new home! All class sessions will be in Room 200 of the Liberal Arts building (behind McDowell Center, next to the south parking lot).

Our speaker for March 2013 was Gino Petrozzi, Manager, National Tax - Employment Tax Advisory Services for Ernst & Young LLP.  He discussed many of the various state laws, concerns, and compliance issues regarding multi-state taxation.

Our speaker for April 2013 was Christina Archer-Walker of the Unemployment Insurance Agency who discussed MI-WAM - the new electronic filing regulations for the State of Michigan.

"Obama Care - Part 1."  Joel Clark answered attendees' questions on the PPACA (Obama Care) at our June 2013 meeting.  

"Obama Care - Part 2."  Jen Young from the J. S. Clark Agency presented updated information and answered attendees' questions on the PPACA (Obama Care) at our August 2013 meeting..  

Outgoing Chapter President Barbara Mattson, CPP recognized Denise Klein, CPP on obtaining her certification in 2013.  New CPPs are recognized by the Chapter on an annual basis. Congratulations, Denise! 

Howard I Goldman, CPP presented ”Year End 2013” at our November 2013 Chapter meeting.  We enjoyed creating our own stir-fry dinners at bd’s Mongolian Barbeque in Novi.

Our March 2014 meeting featured "Short/Long-term Disability”  - presented by Jennifer Young, Sr. Account Mgr., J.S. Clark.

Renae Ruhle presented "Secrets your employees aren't telling you - How You Can Improve Morale and Retention" at our February 2014 meeting in Novi.
