The APA  Detroit Chapter is affiliated with the American Payroll Association, but is an autonomous and independent organization.


The Chapter is a non-profit professional organization dedicated to providing educational, communication, and networking opportunities for payroll professionals.

February Chapter Meeting

NEW! “Know the Numbers 2016”

Statewide Conference
Thanks to all the hardworking committee members, speakers, sponsors, and attendees for making our 2015 Statewide Conference a huge success!  We had another sold-out year with record-breaking attendance and the feedback has been excellent.  Hope to see you next year!

CPP Exam Preparation Class
Our 2016 CPP Exam Preparation Class, presented in conjunction with Schoolcraft College in Livonia, will be held Wednesday evenings beginning May 11th and running through August 24th.  The class format is a lecture on a different payroll topic each week, plus two mini-exams to test your knowledge and preparedness.  For individuals currently certified as a CPP or FPC, the class is expected to be approved for up to 41 recertification credit hours (depending on your attendance).

Cost of the class is not yet determined but is expected to be about $235 (lesser for seniors).  Participants will need the 2016 edition of The Payroll Source book, available from the American Payroll Association at www.americanpayroll.org/store.  Class registration will open in April 2016 – please check the APA Detroit Chapter website at that time for registration details.

Our Chapter has established a group on LinkedIn.  This group is intended for disseminating news and promoting discussions regarding subjects of interest to Detroit Chapter members and prospective members.   We encourage you to join this group.  Chapter Membership is also encouraged, of course, but not required.  Look for “Detroit Chapter American Payroll Association” on LinkedIn, or simply click on this link to learn more

At our February, 2015 meeting Mike Muha, and Mike Melquist from Workforce Software presented "Cloud Time and Attendance: How a modern solution can improve decision making, boost productivity, and provide a better view labor leakage of your total workforce."

Chapter president, Tena Gibson, CPP  hosted the meeting.

At our March, 2015 meeting Luanne Brown, CPP, Payroll Manager at Grand Valley State University, presented an overview of taxable and non- taxable fringe benefits.

Chapter Treasurer and Payroll Payroll Director at Ilitch Holdings Howard I. Goldman, CPP presented “"Form 941 Amendments - What you need to know" at our April, 2015 Chapter Meeting.

"Global Payroll and Foreign Nationals" was presented by Blake Springer, Senior Manager, Deloitte at our June, 2015 Chapter Meeting.

At our July, 2015 meeting Kenny Oguejiofor, Social Security Administration, presented "Information You Want and Need to Know."


November Chapter Meeting
Our November 2015 meeting included recognition of new CPPs/FPCs, election of 2015 officers, and "Year-End 2015/2016 Review: What are the impending changes?" presented by Howard Goldman, CPP.
